OVERVIEW:
Imagine a whimsical collision course between ragtime, two-step parlor dances, jazz, vaudeville, off-color blues, hip-hop swagger, country AND western - and you get the kaleidoscopic musical universe of the Asylum Street Spankers. One of the single best live bands you'll ever see (a model of dynamics and sheer musicality), they're as likely to play music in the orbit of the Hokum Boys and Ida Cox as that of the Beasties and Black Flag or sharp-right turn originals on any given night. Risqué repartee, humor and seamless gear-shifting between styles are just part of their deep charm. Their take on what Greil Marcus called the music of, "old, weird America," is as honest as it is entertaining. |
